Pirate penguin vs ninja chicken 34/15/2023 ![]() Yet just when Og’s settling in, there’s talk of returning him to the wild once more. Following Humphrey’s lead, he finds ways to give the kids in the room some gentle help and guidance. But “it’s a lot smaller than the swamp,” and this new life takes some adjustment. Brisbane’s room, second only to Humphrey himself, with all his basic needs taken care of. Until he was captured from his pond, Og the frog was a pretty average fellow. In this companion novel to Birney’s Friendship According to Humphrey (2005) and its many sequels, readers see the beloved hamster from an amphibian’s perspective. Kibuishi gives his epic tale a hefty nudge toward its long-building climax while giving readers plenty of reasons to stick around for it. Aliens and AIs in the cast come in a variety of hues, elves are a uniform gray, and except for a brief encounter between Emily and a slightly darker lad, the (uncursed) humans default to white. But along with emphatic sound effects, the battle and action scenes in the cleanly drawn, if sometimes cramped, panels feature huge blasts of fire or energy, intricately detailed giant robots, weirdly eyeless monsters, and wild escapades aplenty to keep the pace’s pedal to the metal. Cute animal heads on many figures (the result of a curse) and a scene with benevolent-looking trees provide at least a bit of relief from the grim expressions that all the human and humanoid elven characters almost invariably wear. Now a fiery, destructive phoenix struggling to regain control of her actions, Emily goes on to follow her brother Navin and allies as they battle invading shadows on the nearby world of Typhon, then switches back to human form for a climactic confrontation with the Elf King-in the course of which Emily rips off his mask to a chorus of “ERGH!! NO!!! GRAH! RRGH!! AAAGH!” to expose a rousingly hideous face. The multistranded storyline picks up with Emily’s return to the world of Alledia. Stonekeeper Emily frees the elves from their monstrous masked ruler and sets out to rejoin her brother and mother in the series’ penultimate episode. In a concluding Q&A, Friesen refers to his titular characters using they pronouns.īuckle your seatbelts: This is one goofy ride. Straying from a conventional layout, the vibrant full-color panels often burst from their borders, utilizing unique sizing and shape many have solid, unembellished backgrounds, focusing readers solely on the characters, who bounce around their panels with an infectious, manic glee. Most of the duo’s exploits are rampantly nonsensical and go unresolved, Friesen apparently opting to prioritize silliness over plot and character development that said, readers who revel in such imaginative wackiness should be over the moon. In a series of loosely strung vignettes-some only a few panels and most not more than a few pages-the duo has many oddly madcap adventures, including an encounter with their friend Wizard Wombat, Pirate Penguin’s transformation into a weregoose that leads to a beauty parlor trip, a sudden visit from pal Astronaut Armadillo, and “a barbecue that could have gone better.” The beauty of this construction is that it makes the book an excellent choice to read either episodically or nonlinearly. This third graphic installment in the ongoing series opens with Pirate Penguin sharing his outrageously zany origin story, immediately setting the sugar-high tone that continues throughout. Note: any folding or inflating of this book may cause it to get ruined forever, but it's totally fine, don't worry about it.A nutty ninja chicken and a hapless pirate penguin have more screwball adventures.
